Within the field of organic chemistry, usually it is defined, restricted to the meaning, purified organic compounds isolated and produced from natural sources. Within medicinal chemistry, the denotation is often more over restricted to secondary metabolites. These are not essential for survival, but nevertheless bestow organisms that produce them an evolutionary privilege. Many secondary metabolites are cytotoxic and have been designed and optimized through evolution for use as chemical warfare agents against predators, prey and conflicting organisms.

Natural Products also have pharmacological or biological activity that can be of therapeutic perks in the remedies of various diseases or infections. In addition, synthetic analogs of natural products with improved potency and well-being can be prepared and; therefore, natural products are usually used as a preparatory point for drug discovery. In fact, natural products are the source of inspiration for approximately one half of U.S.

Natural products can also be organized by whole synthesis and have played a central role in the producing of the field of organic chemistry by providing challenging synthetic targets.
